Letter to Kitty on Mar 15, 2019

Hello Kitty, 

How are you doing?  It's me! 
You know what. I could think about something to share with you after talking to you the other day.

I read a BBC article about a 16-year-old teen living with her alcoholic mom since she was little.  Normally people would imagine how kid living with alcoholic mom would turn out right? But amazingly, she turned out just fine and became a very understanding young lady who in turn supporting her mom and her younger sister. Her mom eventually sought help and determined to be out from liquor. They became good friends to each other. 

Another article I read was about a 25-year-old man who was shocked, scared, lost and crying when he learned he developed Multiple Sclerosis (MS). This is what he wrote:
"I was alone when I got my final diagnosis from the doctor. By then, I'd done some research and was being very logical about it all - almost cutting off my emotions and thinking, "Right, let’s focus"."

Eventually, he learned how to live with it. He later found his partner and now has a beautiful little girl.

The teen girl and the man really did a great job on pushing emotions away and be rational. 

Can you imagine what their lives might turn out if they let their emotions to lead their lives?

If you are still feeling uncomfortable about your school trip, maybe try to cut off your emotions and instead listing what you need to prepare for the trip?  Review the places you will visit and see what you need to prepare.  Talk to your friends how they prepare their stuff. This might help you feel less anxious but ready for the fun stuff.

คิดง่ายๆก่อนนะ blockchain มันก็คือ database นั่นเอง แล้วลองมองว่า one record of data or one transaction is a block นะ  database ที่ว่านี้ เก็บข้อมูลของ multiple records of data หรือ transactions ที่มันเชื่อมต่อกัน เลยเป็น chain  

ลักษณะของ Database ของ blockchain นี่มันเป็นยังไงกัน
สำหรับ blockchain นะ มันต้อง Distributed Database บางทีเราก็จะได้ยินเขาเรียกว่า
Blockchain Database, Distributed Ledger, Shared Ledger, หรือว่า Distributed Ledger Database

ที่มัน distributed นะเพราะหนึ่งในหัวใจของ blockchain คือ มันต้อง decentralized แปลว่ามันไม่ centralized. เพราะงั้นนะ มันจะไม่มี central administrator computer หรือ node ที่จะเก็บ database/ledger ไว้คนเดียว แต่มันจะเป็นแบบ peer-to-peer network คือ เจ้าคอมหรือโหนดแต่ละตัวมีบทบาทเท่าๆกัน คอมทุกตัว จะมี copy ของ database/ledger
เวลามี new transaction initiates; user of computerA จ่ายเงินให้ user of computerB เจ้า computerB หรือ node ที่อยู่ใกล้ๆก็จะรู้และจะ update database/ledger และกระซิบบอกเพื่อนคอมตัวอื่นที่อยู่ใกล้ๆว่ามีคนจ่ายเงินอีกแล้ว มาช่วยกัน confirm transaction หน่อยเร้ว เพื่อนคอมตัวอื่นก็จะต้อง update database/ledger ของตัวเองและ ช่วย confirm transaction บอกต่อกันไปเรื่อยๆใน network เดียวกัน สำหรับ network ใหญ่ๆนะ บางทีเขาจะตั้ง leader computers/nodes ในการ confirm transaction เพื่อให้มันเร็วขึ้น

เอ แล้วข้อมูลที่เก็บใน database หรือ ledger เนี่ยมันเป็นไงเหรอ
มันก็ต้องผ่านกระบวนการ complex cryptography ก่อน อย่างเช่น ไม่มีใครรู้ identity ของกันและกันใน database จะรู้ก็แต่ public address ของ identity นั้นๆ
 "Well… a person’s identity is hidden via complex cryptography and represented only by their public address. So, if you were to look up a person’s transaction history, you will not see “Bob sent 1 BTC” instead you will see “1MF1bhsFLkBzzz9vpFYEmvwT2TbyCt7NZJ sent 1 BTC”.
รูปข้างล่างนี้เป็นตัวอย่างของ Ethereum Cryptocurrency Transactions เห็นไม๊ เราจะไม่รู้ว่า From or To เนี่ยเป็นใคร

แล้วที่บอกว่า Blockchain is IMMUTABLE ล่ะ แปลว่ายังไง
ก็แปลว่า Completed Transaction แต่ละ block อะ มันเปลี่ยนแปลงไม่ได้ ที่เปลี่ยนไม่ได้แล้วก็เพราะไม่มีใครจะ hack มันได้ เพราะ Blockchain ใช้ระบบ cryptographic hash function

ตัวอย่างเช่น Bitcoin ใช้ระบบ SHA-256 (Secure Hashing Algorithm 256)
SHA-256 จะแปลงภาษาที่เราเข้าใจกันเป็น 256-bit length

ความหมายของมันก็คือ ไม่ว่า input จะเข้ามามากหรือน้อย output จะเป็น fixed 256-bit length เสมอ

ต่อมาดูนี่นะ แค่เปลี่ยน T เป็น t ผลที่ได้ก็ต่างกันลิบลับ

Blockchain นี่ แต่ละ block เขาจะมี hash pointer เป็นตัวเชื่อม blocks เข้าด้วยกัน เจ้า hash pointer นอกจากจะเก็บ address ของ block ที่มาก่อนแล้ว ก็ยังเก็บข้อมูลของ block ที่มาก่อนด้วย
ทีนี้ลองจินตนาการดูนะ ถ้ามี hacker เข้ามาแก้ไขข้อมูลใน transaction ที่อยู่ใน block 1 คราวนี้ ข้อมูลใน block 2 เก็บจาก block 1 ก็ต้องเปลี่ยนไปด้วย แล้วข้องมูลของ block 3 ที่เก็บจาก block 2 ก็เปลี่ยนไปด้วย เป็นไปทั้ง chain ซึ่งเขาบอกว่าเป็นไปไม่ได้ เพราะฉะนั้น blockchain is immutable

ตกลงเขียนมาถึงตรงนี้ เราเองเข้าใจมากขึ้นหรือเปล่านะ
งงอยู่ตั้งนาน หาอ่านอยู่หลายเวบ ที่แท้ มันเป็นอย่างนี้เอง
ที่เราอยากรู้ต่อไปคือ Hyperledger Fabric blockchain framework platform ที่ developer เขาเอามาใช้สร้าง blockchain network กัน

India and Pakistan news became part of the top 10 international news this week.

I have just read Al Jazeera news my friend sent in LINE group.

"...Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan extended an olive branch earlier today, offering New Delhi cooperation in fighting terrorism in order to end the standoff."

Reading that part of the news, I just fell in love with the words "Olive Branch".  I thought about olive oil I recently put on acorn pumpkin, sprinkled with salt and pepper, baked 40 minutes and Wow! Yummy!  This made my other thought to also believe that "Olive Branch" must have been good too.  Indeed,"Olive Branch" is filled with great meanings.

"Traditionally, the olive branch has been used as a symbol of peace. Its origins as a symbol of peace come from ancient Greek culture, when Athena planted an olive tree to win possession of Athens over Poseidon. Since then it has been used throughout many different cultures around the world."

"The olive branch also has connections to the Roman empire. During that time, when a leader held out an olive branch, it was considered a signal of pleading for peace. "

Dealing With Difficult People

As a human being living in the world, one has no choice but living with others whom one needs to interact with daily.  I am no exception.  Half year ago, I changed my job within the same company.  Because of this, I needed to work with someone I found very difficult to work with. Let's call this person Mr. A.

After a month working with Mr. A, I realized what made it hard for both me and him to work together. Three years ago, we used to work in the same team.  Once we disagreed with each other in one of our meetings. As he raised his voice, so, I raised my voice back. So, it was not a fruitful disagreement. (You know disagreement is not always bad. It is how you react when you disagree that can be bad.)  Since then, we seemed to have bias against each other.  Coming back to work with each other again, I have already changed.  I have been practicing mindfulness, having self awareness, meditation and such. I have no more bias against him. But well, I cannot just go tell him, hey, I changed.

After a month working with Mr, A, I learned how to approach him better. When he said something I disagreed but there was no benefit of arguing with him, then, I accepted what he said. But if I thought it would be more benefit to our work with my idea, then, I put myself together first and tried to compose the right and nice words in my head before expressing my idea to him.  When I reviewed his recorded knowledge sharing sessions and I found very useful, I wrote an email to him and our manager how useful his recorded sessions were.  I asked for his help from time to time and never once forgot to thank him. 

After a month working with Mr. A, I also prayed for him in my mind when I saw him daily.  My mind chanted "Met-taa Khun-nung A-ra-hung Met-taa" (เมตตาคุณณัง อะระหัง เมตตา) Met-taa means kindness, mercy and probably love as well. A-ra-hung means one who is far from passions like greed and anger.  So, putting them together, it means one who is far from passions is being kind and loves you. 

After two months working with Mr. A, his negative feeling towards me seemed to be less and less. We worked together much better.  These days, there are still bumpy and rocky moments while we work together but I still continue my way of treating him.  I realize now that it is myself who feel happy as I could let it go and never hold any grudge against him.

คนเราส่วนมากพอพูดถึงบทสวดอิติปิโส ก็จะอ๋อทันที บทสวดอิติปิโส มีสามส่วน คือ บทสวดพระพุทธคุณ บทสวดพระธรรมคุณ และบทสวดพระสังฆคุณ เคยสงสัยเหมือนกันว่า เอ ความหมายเป็นไทย แปลว่าอะไร และอีกเช่นกัน อากู๋ตอบได้ทุกอย่าง

วันนี้หลวงพ่อท่านบอกว่า บทสวดอิติปิโส คือพุทธพจน์ หรือ พุทธวจนะ (บาลี: พุทฺธวจน) แปลว่า พระดำรัสหรือคำพูดของพระพุทธเจ้า

เราเลยสงสัย อ้าวทำไมพระพุทธเจ้าท่านถึงต้องสรรเสริญพระพุทธเจ้า ด้วยตัวพระองค์เอง

สมัยโบราณผู้คนจะร่ําลือถึงพระศาสดาที่ตนนับถือตลอดไป จนกระทั้ง ธรรมะของพระองค์ รวมทั้งคุณลักษณะของผู้เป็นสาวกแห่งองค์ท่าน เพื่อที่จะให้กิตติศัพท์เป็นที่กล่าวขวัญขจรขจายตรงกัน ไม่ใช่พูดอย้่างโน้นทีอย่างนี้ทีกันตามอําเภอใจของแต่ละคน แบบเห็นไม่ครบ รู้ไม่จริง หรือขาดๆ เกินๆ ด้วยประการใด ก็จําเป็นที่องค์ศาสดา ต้องเป็นผู้ตรัสนําด้วยพระองค์เองก่อน

ดังเช่น เมื่อพระพุทธองค์ตรัสตอบ พระเจ้าอชาตศัตรู ซึ่งมีที่มาใน “สามัญญผลสูตร” ว่าถ้าทําตามคําสอนของพระพุทธเจ้าแล้วจะได้อะไร? หรืออีกนัยคือพระองค์เองมีดีอยางไร? จะให้แก่เหล่าสาวก ท่านก็จาระไนคุณลักษณะสามัญแห่งความเป็นพระพุทธเจ้า ไม่ว่าอดีตหรือปัจจุบัน ซึ่งเหมือนๆกันทุกพระองค์อย่างละเอียด ก่อนจะแสดงถึงผลที่สาวกปฏิบัติได้กันเป็นปกติ

ธัมมจักกัปปวัตนสูตร

วันนี้ ได้มีโอกาสสวดธัมมจักกัปปวัตนสูตร ปกติแล้ว ตอนสวดมนต์ที่บ้านไม่เคยสวดบทนี้เลย ปีนี้เป็นปีที่สามที่ได้สวดบทนี้ และเช่นเคย คือสวดที่วัดเนื่องในวันมาฆบูชา (ปีนี้ตรงกับวันที่ 19 กุมภาพันธ์ แต่วัดที่นี่จะจัดงานตรงวันอาทิตย์ เพื่อให้ชาวบ้านนอกอย่างเรา ที่ไม่หยุดเหมือนเมืองไทย ได้มีโอกาสมาทำบุญที่วัด) 

เมื่อก่อนไม่เคยรู้เลย บทสวดนี้มีความหมายยังไง ถ้าเคยได้เรียนมาตอนเด็กๆ ก็ต้องบอกว่าไม่เคยสนใจจะรู้ และท่องจำเพื่อสอบ เสร็จแล้วก็ลืม สามปีที่แล้วพอได้สวด หลวงพ่อท่านอธิบาย พอกลับบ้านก็เลยมาถามอากู๋ 

กล่าวโดยสรุป ธัมมจักกัปปวัตนสูตร แสดงถึง

• ส่วนที่สุดสองอย่าง ที่พระพุทธศาสนาปฏิเสธ อันได้แก่ "กามสุขัลลิกานุโยค" คือการหมกมุ่นอยู่ในกามสุข และ "อัตตกิลมถานุโยค" คือการทรมานตนให้ลำบากโดยเปล่าประโยชน์หรือทุกรกิริยา "คือการกระทำกิจที่ทำได้โดยยาก" คือ การอดอาหาร
• อริยสัจสี่ คือธรรมที่เป็นความจริงอันประเสริฐสี่ประการ
• ทุกข์
• สมุทัย
• นิโรธ
• มรรค (มรรคมีองค์แปด)

Valentine with Valentime

Today is Valentine's Day Feb 14th, 2019.
Happy Valentine's Day!

Wow, I have not written anything in my blog for almost 2 years already.
Today, I am not going to write about what else I have done to be a better person.  Just would like to share something fun from the radio I listened to yesterday.

The radio host asked listeners to call in and tell him "What words people say and make you feel kind of annoyed or funny."  For him, the word was "Valentine's Day" as he said he heard many people pronounced "Valentime's Day", you see the "m" there. 

Here are a few words mentioned in his show:
1. Valentine - why call it "Valentime"
2. Iran - it is not "ai-ran"
3. Iraq - it is not "ai-raq"
4. Irregardless - this is not a word at all
5. Nuclear - pls it is not nukular as the former president Bush said
6. Vacuum
7. Guitar 

Too bad I needed to step out from my car to buy grocery so, I missed lots of fun and many more words.  

Coming back home that day, when thinking about that, I could think about couple words that people pronounce them their own way as they do not know exactly how native speakers say those words.  

Here are a couple of them:
1. Huawei - Americans pronounce this word in many ways; วาเว ว๊าเหว่ with the leading H sound that almost cannot hear.  I have to ask my Chinese friend to teach me how to say it right.
2. Netflix - I believe people here say เนทฟลิกซ์ but a YouTube show host in Thailand says เหน็ดฟลิกซ์  This sounds funny to me. You know เหน็ด and เนท are not the same.
3. IKEA - Americans say "ai-kea".  Swedish, the home country of IKEA say อิเกีย
4. Amazon - Americans say เอมาซอน but Thai people say อะ เม ซอน
5. Vicks Vaporub - instead of เวเปอรับ, Thai people say วาเปอรับ
